Sona Steering Systems Limited ( http://www.sonagroup.com ) was established in 1987 as a joint venture of Maruti Udyog Limited, with technical collaboration with M/s. Koyo Seiko Co., Japan. The commercial production started in 1987. The company initially was in the business of manufacturing Steering System for all passenger cars and MUV made by MUL. Subsequently, M/s. Koyo Seiko also participated financially in this company and today they have 21.5% of equity in Sona. Because of this, the name of Sona Steering Systems Limited was changed to Sona Koyo Steering Systems Limited. Currently the company has expanded its Steering business to include Drive Line products and components for off-road vehicles. The customers include almost all OEM\\\’s namely Maruti Udyog Limited-Gurgaon, Toyota Kirloskar Motors Ltd.-Bangalore, Hyundai Motors India - Chennai, Mahindra & Mahindra Nasik, Hindustan Motors Ltd. Uttarpara & Chennai, Eicher Motors Ltd. Indore, General Motors India Halol, Sona Koyo Chennai plant etc. The company also exports its component and assemblies to Japan and USA.

Manufacturing System:
The company follows Toyota Production System on its shop floor. The Toyota Production System is a pull system of production with a single piece flow on its machining and assembly line. In this system, one operator operates multi machines and also does multi work on the assembly line. The process of manufacturing also involves heat treatment of few components before they are used for the assembly line. The heat treatment process is a continuous one and operates on 24×7 basis. The furnaces are shut down on alternate basis for carrying out the preventive maintenance approximate once in ten days. The subsequent machining and the assembly line would end up in \\\’No Material\\\’ situation if there were any delay in heat-treating the components
