In this paper, we start by providing an overview of the main components of intelligent tutoring systems. We then provide a brief summary of different types of ITSs. Next, we present a detailed discussion of two components, the student model and the pedagogical
module. We close by discussing some of the open questions in ITS as well as future directions of the field.
